Firearms In Canada (FEDERAL)

In order to own firearms in Canada, you must first complete the Federal non-restricted Canadian Firearms Safety Course and successfully pass both the written and practical exams. Once you successfully complete the Non-Restricted firearms course you may (optional) then continue with the Restricted firearms course and once again successfully complete both the written and practical exams. There is no course for the Prohibited class of firearms and in most cases the average individual is unable to obtain a Prohibited firearms license. The Federal firearms license is valid for 5 years and must be renewed before the expiry date.


In Canada, firearms fall into three categories. They are Non-Restricted firearms, which consists of rifles and shotguns; Restricted firearms which consist of mainly handguns and firearms with barrel lengths of 470mm or less, and Prohibited firearms which are handguns with barrel lengths which are 105mm of less; handguns which discharge .25 or .32 caliber ammunition and fully automatic firearms.

Hunting In Ontario (PROVINCIAL)

In order to hunt in Ontario, you are required to complete the Ontario Hunting Education Program which is developed by the province and administered by certified hunter education instructors. The hunting license is valid for 1 or 3 years and must be renewed accordingly. Once again you must successfully complete the course and pass the written examination to be eligible and approved for a hunting license.

Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC)

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) is very informative and designed to teach you everything you need to learn in order to be successful in both the written and practical exams. The CFSC includes 8 to 10 hours of classroom instruction which includes a slide presentation, discussion, and hands on training with the recommended selection of firearms. When you attend the class, each student is issued with the official student manual that is an excellent resource and guideline for the training session. The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) was developed in partnership with the provinces and territories, national organizations with an ongoing interest in firearms safety, and many firearms and hunter education course instructors from across Canada. This course was developed to meet the mandatory requirements of section 7 of the Firearms Act.  The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire non-restricted firearms must take the CFSC and pass the tests.

Topics covered in the CFSC include:

  • the evolution of firearms, major parts, types and actions;
  • basic firearms safety practices;
  • ammunition;
  • operating firearm actions;
  • safe handling and carry procedures;
  • firing techniques and procedures;
  • care of non-restricted firearms;
  • responsibilities of the firearms owner/user; and
  • safe storage, display, transportation and handling of non-restricted firearms.

Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC)

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) is very also informative and designed to teach you everything you need to learn in order to be successful in both the written and practical exams. The CRFSC includes 6 to 8 hours of classroom instruction which includes a slide presentation, discussion, and hands on training with the recommended selection of 3 restricted firearms. In accordance with the Firearms Act, a new firearms safety course focusing on restricted firearms (primarily handguns) was developed and implemented on February 1, 1999. The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire restricted and/or prohibited firearms must take the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and pass the tests.

Topics covered in the CRFSC include:
  • the evolution of firearms, major parts, types and actions;
  • basic firearms safety practices;
  • ammunition;
  • operating handgun actions;
  • firing techniques and procedures for handguns;
  • care of restricted firearms;
  • responsibilities of the firearms owner/user; and
  • safe storage, display, transportation and handling of restricted firearms
